Ad Fontes Forum: Food Shortages and Engineered Food.
The Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science (DUJS) will host the inaugural Ad Fontes forum on the evening of March 31st from 4:30 to 6:30 in Moore Theater at the Hopkins Center.

In recent years, overpopulation, climate change, and a host of other factors have resulted in widespread food shortages throughout the developing world. This, in conjunction with the growing presence of engineered organisms in the United States food industry has catapulted the issue of genetically modified crops to the forefront of national and global dialogues. The purpose of the first Ad Fontes forum is to engage the Dartmouth community in these dialogues and to present both sides of the debate, exploring the risks and benefits, the hopes and fears, of a controversial technology.

The 2011 Ad Fontes forum will feature the following panelists: Nina Fedoroff, Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State, Natalie DiNicola, Vice President of Monsanto Corporation, Doug Gurian-Sherman, senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, and Eric Holt-Giménez, the executive director of the Food First Institute for Food and Development Policy.

The Ad Fontes Forum is intended to engage undergraduate students in relevant global issues through discussion among a diverse panel of speakers. This inaugural panel consists of leaders of industry and food policy experts who will explore the controversy surrounding genetically engineered food crops and their political, human, and economic impacts. A member of the Dartmouth faculty will engage the panelists in a 90-minute round-table discussion and will then facilitate a 30-minute question and answer session between audience members and the panel.

Admission for the 2011 Ad Fontes forum is free and open to the public. Following the forum, a reception will be held for attendees and panelists at the Top of the HOP in the Hopkins Center.

Childhood Vaccines - Community Engagement Meeting. The New Hampshire Immunization Program, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), invites you to participate in a Community Engagement Meeting, Wednesday, June 15, 2011, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services, to discuss how, and whether, CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) incorporate values and social factors into the decision-making process for childhood immunization.

This Community Engagement Meeting in Concord, NH, is one of four meetings that will be conducted around the country to delve into important public policy questions related to childhood vaccines and to give that input to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the CDC, and the public.

Factors for consideration in policy-making decisions might include severity and rarity of a disease, the costs and cost effectiveness associated with a vaccine for the disease, and the impact on the infant immunization schedule. The meeting participants will be asked to weigh what questions should be considered by CDC and discuss ways that ACIP and CDC can incorporate differing factors and priorities into the decisions regarding a new vaccine.

The New Hampshire Community Engagement meeting will include briefings on the present ACIP process for formulating vaccine use recommendations. Currently ACIP discussion takes place around disease burden, vaccine safety and efficacy, and program feasibility, as well as overall costs, cost effectiveness, and the challenges of protecting children from rare but serious diseases and the high emotional and financial costs.

This meeting, and three others in cities around the country, will bring regional priorities to a panel of national-level stakeholders who will work toward a recommendation to CDC. The meetings will focus on the specific example of meningococcal vaccines for infants and children.

There is no fee to attend or participate. We are unable to provide daycare services. In recognition of your willingness to contribute to this important process, those who pre-register and attend the full meeting are eligible to receive $50.00 from Keystone, the meeting facilitator.
