Sea Ice Presentation
On September 24th, Cathleen Geiger presented a public program on her 2007 expedition to the Beaufort Sea, about 200 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska. Cathleen is a professor in the Geography Department of the University of Delaware.
The purpose of the trip was to understand the dynamic contributions of sea ice relative to its rapidly changing thickness. The collected data is being prepared for permanent archive at the National Snow and Ice Data Center as part of a global International Polar Year (IPY) archive so that modelers and analysts can study the events of Spring 2007 for many years to come. She showed materials about her temporary base camp, interviews with the participants, the sound of sea ice, its underwater appearance, and she incorporated dramatic materials showing the rapid decline in sea ice in last decade.
Sea ice helps to moderate the temperature on our planet -- our own most efficient and effective air conditioner. Further loss of our polar ice regions will help to accelerate global warming.
