Actions and Advocacy
The League of Women Voters never supports or opposes any political party or candidate; League of Women Voters takes action on an issue or advocates for a cause when there is a League position that supports the issue or speaks to the cause.
Leagues act on current program position and, under carefully defined conditions, on the Principles of the League. Action is taken at all levels - National, State, Bay Area, Santa Clara County, and Local. Each level acts on positions appropriate to it: the State League may take action based on state program position, and local Leagues may take action based on local positions. Positions may apply to a lower level; for example National and State positions may be applied to local concerns. But a local position may apply only to local concerns; it cannot apply at a higher level. Action will depend on authorization by the appropriate board, following their agreement that members understand and agree on position, and that action is appropriate as to time, need and effectiveness. Action may take the form of letter writing, testimony, petition campaigns, coalitions, lobbying, monitoring, or litigation.
